Welcome To CENTRO of Tampa Bay This page features Latino events in the Tampa Bay Area. . *** . Can Candidates Of Different Parties Talk Civilly To Each Other Without Insinuating Bodily Harm.
At a recent rally of the immigrants on May 1, 2006, Steven A. Eckstein, Democratic Candidate for County Commission District # 1 tells a story to both Alfred Ruiz, Republican Candidate for State Representative, District 58 and Daniel Suarez Democratic State Representative for District 58. The story Eckstein went on to tell was of someone stupid enough to go on stage would have rocks and bottles thrown at him with a broken skull and blood gushing.
Alfred Ruiz abruptly left the conversation and mentioned that he was bored with the tone of the story. Eckstein replied that the key point had already been made.
Daniel Suarez followed Alfred Ruiz and said that he was one of the organizers of the rally and that his best work is done in the background . *** . Are You Willing To Have Your Food Bill Go From $150.00 A Week To $600.00 Per Week By This Time Next Year? "Do you think that we need to be careful about the new immigration legislation that is being introduced……? Does the legislation that some are proposing going to cause prices to escalate into uncontrollable proportions….. Will these escalating prices mean the end of the middle class in America? Are we ready to risk our way of life because of the hype of the moment. Will we allow the opportunists and emotional media hype to control our rational thinking? Will we allow the middle class simply to become just an extension of the poor.....? What do you think will happen if prices of everything could reach unbelievable proportions like a loaf of bread could cost more than $20.00 or a gallon of milk could cost more than $30.00 by this time next year? If you don't believe that his is possible, well, it is certainly happening at the gas pumps today….. How much more can the American possibly bare? In the process of making immigration a viable solution we need to come up with legislation that will cure our problems. However, we also need to make sure that the legislation enacted does not trigger more serious problems than what it promises to cure…... If you are truly ready to see escalating prices across the board, then yes send the 12,000,000 back home…… But remember this if you do this, the prices will undoubtedly escalate at uncontrollable levels….. The only people who will benefit will be the super wealthy….. And they will just become wealthier……. The middle class will become a thing of the past……. And small businesses will fold nationwide literally overnight…… I do not believe that as the world leader that we should begin to blame all of our problems on the poorest in our society…… And remember that the world is watching and judging us on our humanitarian actions within our own boarders. ... We need to get rid of all the media hype that the opportunists are trying to make us believe. We need to think logically because what we do today will not be reversed for generations to come.….. The fight to keep our boarders secure while maintaining our economy stable is not an easy fight. But with a sound thought out plan we will be able to advance with a minimal risk to our economy….. This plan should also offer a more humanitarian less repressive policy….. I have been advocating a compromise. A compromise is a position where neither side wins however both sides give up some concessions in an effort to make progress in a given situation…. And this is why I support the Martinez-Hagel compromise……. Senators Chuck Hagel and Mel Martinez have set out a compromise that seems to be the best solution to date. Their compromise offers a workable plan. In addition it will strengthen our boarders. Please read the information I have received of their proposed compromise because it is extremely important for our future….. Once you read their compromise let me know what you think of it at: AlRuiz@TampaBayUpdate.com I look forward to hearing from you about this issue……" Alfred Ruiz/Candidate for Florida House of Representatives, District 58 . Hagel-Martinez Plan Would Create Three Groups By Elizabeth B. Crowley, CQ Staff A proposal by Republican Sens. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and Mel Martinez of Florida would divide the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants already in the United States into three groups, based on how long they have been in the country: Long-Term Illegal Immigrants Under Hagel-Martinez, those who have been in the country for more than five years would be allowed to adjust to legal status without leaving the country. They would be able to obtain green cards after working six years provided they: • Passed background checks. • Worked at least three of the past five years in the United States. • Paid all taxes due. • Registered for military Selective Service. • Learned English and American civics. • Paid $2,000 in fines, in addition to application fees. Mid-Term Illegal Immigrants Those in the country for two to five years would be eligible for temporary work visas, which they would be required to obtain at one of about 20 land ports of entry. Applicants would be required to leave the United States, though the process could be completed within a day. These temporary work visa holders would be able to gain more privileges over time, although that could take as long as eight years after re-entry. In the meantime, re-entering workers would be eligible for renewable three-year temporary worker visas. In the first year of such a visa, an employer could sponsor a worker’s green card application. A worker could self-sponsor the green card application in the fourth year of such a visa. Workers would be able to become legal permanent residents — green card holders — as long as green cards were available under annual caps. The number of green cards available would be increased to 450,000 from 290,000 for 10 years, and then return to 290,000. To obtain temporary worker visas, midterm illegals would be subject to visa requirements under current law (background checks, fees, paid taxes), along with some new requirements. Short-Term Illegals Those who arrived in the United States in the past two years would be required to return home, and from there could apply to enter the United States as temporary workers. There would be no guarantee that such workers could obtain temporary worker visas. Stepped-up workplace enforcement as well as increased border and interior enforcement would make remaining in the country more difficult for these individuals, as other illegals adjusted to legal status. Temporary Workers In order to gain support for the Hagel-Martinez compromise, negotiators agreed to reduce the annual cap on future temporary workers — those not now in the country — from 400,000 to 325,000. Temporary workers also would have stronger labor protections, including prevailing wage requirements and job portability, than under another plan advanced by the Judiciary Committee. . *** .
Alfred Ruiz Candidate for House of Representatives, District 58 poses with Blanca Gonzalez and Sylvia Torres to show his support for their cause. The organizer's thanked Alfred for his presence at their demonstration. And promised that people will remember his presence in their time of need. An estimated 6,000 people participated at the peaceful demonstration. .
Demonstrators hold flags representing Latino and American cultures. .
Angel Garcia-Garcia "We are here to be available to work for money." .
Aurelio Cruz "We want to see if they would give us permission to work so they would not treat us like ciminals any longer." . Nohemi Benitez "We want a chance to work and live like everyone else." .
I do not want to be deported... "The government wants to pass these laws 4437 or 2454. However, we are human beings not cattle, we deserve respect and equal rights. This march today is to support anyone and everyone who works to help build this country. We want this country to hear the united voice of the immigrant workers." .
Blanca Gonzalez, Organizer "We are protesting the laws that are inhuman and that criminalize undocumented workers. We have come here to do work that no one else wants to do… We do not come here to kill or destroy, we come here to help build a stronger nation. The U.S. should remember that the boarder crossed us we did not cross the boarder. We ask the Senate to think with their minds but act with there hearts. We ask them to be compassionate towards us." .
.
Maria McCourt We Favor the Spector Bill "Immigrants would like a comprehensive immigration reform that is humane. We support the Spector Judiciary Committee Bi-partisan Bill. It addresses boarder security and is non punitive towards undocumented immigrants. We do not support the Frisk bill 4437 that has passed the U.S. House because it will separate families." *** .
Eddie Adams Jr. Candidate for U.S. House Endores Alfred Ruiz for Candidate for Florida House. "We now have a new candidate from our ranks. As I see it the Hispanic Club has to unite and support Alfred Ruiz because he represents the Hispanic Club in Tampa where the majority of Hispanics are concentrated. At this time the Hispanics and other minorities have little representation and they need someone like Al who will represent them in Tallahassee. With a candidate like Alfred the Republican party shows that we are not the party of the rich but rather the party of the people. Alfred Ruiz did not grow up with a gold spoon in his mouth. His father worked in a factory most of his life and always had a second job. And his mother cleaned houses for a living. In his early teen years, Alfred became rebellious and finally dropped out of high school. But then realized that he was caught in a down hill spiral. When he turned 17 Al joined the U.S. Navy in an effort to get away from negative influences on the street. He obtained his GED in the Navy during the Veitnam conflict Era. He served aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal for 2 years and finished his enlistment with a secret clearence while working in the Bureau of Naval Personnel. Alfred Ruiz earned his degrees the hard way. He married and worked during the day and earned his degrees at night. Al currently has an A.S. degree in Business Administration from Middlesex Community College. And he went on to get his B.S. in Business Management From Charter Oak College in Connecticut. Alfred also has successfully completed Graduate courses at Southern Connecticut State University Graduate School in Connecticut and USF Graduate School in Tampa, Florida. Alfred has fought for people's rights. Al was elected by his peers in Connecticut to be president of Local number 6 of the Union of Telephone workers to fight for their rights. Al was elected to be president of the Spanish Community of Wallingford to fight for the rights of the underprivileged. And so Al is the first to admit that he has made mistakes during his lifetime. And he represents people who are not perfect and have also made mistakes. Al believes that people are tired of politicans who try project a perfect image. And so Alfred represents the people who have not graduated from Harvard or Yale. He represents people who have fallen off the track and have managed to dust themselves and somehow have managed to survive. He represents people who turn to God for direction. Al is a Christian and believes that others have a right to their own faith based beliefs. Alfred believes that our moral fiber as individuals and as a nation is based on faith based organizations of all kinds which support a fundamental moral code. And so he constantly reminds his family and others to turn to God for direction during crisis and non crisis situations." Eddie Adams Jr./Candidate for U.S. House . ***

Oscar Kanahan Pledges Support For Candidates! Oscar Kanahan says that our job is to let the people know that the Rebpublican party is not the party of the rich as the Democrats would have you believe. And we need to support our Republican candidates. I thank Eddie Adams Jr the candidate for U.S. House of Representatives and David Schmidt candidate for board of Education for coming to our meeting. Because of their presence here they are saying that the unified voice of the hispanics is important to them. And we need to support candidates who are willing to sacrific their tme to show us that they support us. There are other candidates such as Trey Traviesa who has always been a part of this club since its inception. He has supported us with help and to date is the highest donor to the Hispanic Club. Traviesa has done a wonderul job in Tallahassee and as a result will have an easy win for his second term. And we will stand behind him every step of the way. And now we have Alfred Ruiz is representing us in Tampa. He is running for the Florida Representative district 58 seat. I have taken over as the chairman of his campaign and we will soon have a united all out grass roots effort for him. Alfred Ruiz is part of the community. He represents a man who as a boy was influenced by the streets of New York. Eventually he dropped out of high school. However, he began to realize that he was headed in the wrong direction. And joined the U.S. Navy to get away from negative influences. He managed to get his GED while in the U.S. Navy. He married and worked and went to school at night and has earned his B.S. degree in Business Management from Charter Oak State University. Al Ruiz is a fighter. I remember Alfred Ruiz was in charge of waving signs for Martinez in Tampa. And one particular day we were demonstrating on the pro-Bush side, after Bush decided to place more controls on flights to Cuba. And the rumor was going around that Martinez was going to lose. But Al was there and he was the only person waving Martinez signs and handing out Martinez pamphlets to the Cuban, Bush supporters. In the face of a pouring rain. His determination along with the grass roots campaign that we are forming for him will make the difference for a sure win in November.
